How to Play MUD2 as a Guest

MUD2 is a text game. To access the game, a program must run on your computer that allows interactive text communication with a remote server. There are several such programs in existence, including programs that are shipped as standard components of Windows, or programs dedicated to MUD2.

You can try MUD2 without opening an account, by entering the game as a guest. This page is here to assist you in finding the best method for connecting to the game. If you already have an account at MUD2.COM, you may want to visit our How To Play page.

The Java-Based Graphical Front-End One of our own, McNabb the wizard, developed the easiest tool with which to access the game. If your browser supports Java and Javascript (that is, most modern browsers including Internet Explorer and Netscape), this may be the preferred method of accessing the game. Note that downloading all code components may take a bit of time, so please be patient when you access the game the very first time.

Plain telnet Most operating systems, including most versions of Windows, contain a telnet client program (TELNET.EXE for Windows users.) These implementations are typically without any bells and whistles, often without color support, but they are available on just about any computer. If you use telnet, connect to www.mud2.com, port 23. To enter the game, log on as mudguest, and when the Option (H for Help): prompt is displayed, type P to play the game.

Tours: MUD2 offers a feature to help new users explore the game. After you successfully entered the game and you are in the Elizabethan tearoom, type TOURS for further instructions.

Important: if you are connecting through a corporate firewall, or if your browser is configured to use a "proxy server", not all these access methods may work for you. If the Java-based Front-End fails to connect, try to connect using the plain telnet method. If that method also fails, it may be necessary to request assistance from your network administrator before you can connect to the game.
