The MUD2 Front-End for Older Browsers

Created by McNabb

The MUD2 Front-End is designed for Netscape Navigator 4 or later, or Internet Explorer 4 or later. However, if you are adventurous, you may wish to try the links below. Note that these links will not present a properly sized browser window, so you may want to manually resize it, turn off toolbars and other features to ensure that the entire playing area is visible on your screen.

For your information, we have successfully tested the front-end using Netscape Navigator 3 on Windows and Unix, and Netscape Navigator 2.02 (yes, that's correct) under OS/2 Warp. However, we have not been able to connect successfully using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.

Playing MUD2 is subject to the Terms and Conditions. MUD2 is the copyrighted work of MUSE, Ltd. and is operated under license.

Important: if you are connecting through a corporate firewall, or if your browser is configured to use a "proxy server", chances are that you won't be able to use the MUD2 Front-End. This is due to the limitations of the security model of the Java language, designed to prevent unauthorised access to your computer.

Playing the Game

If you already have an account at mud2.com, please click the matching resolution entry in the Enter MUD row. The front-end program will ask for your account ID and password.

If you are a visitor and would like to try the game as a guest, please click the matching resolution entry in the Enter MUD as a Guest row. This will allow you to create a persona in the game with limited powers, but enough for an initial exploration.

If It Doesn't Work

If the Java Front-End fails to work for you, or behaves erratically, we urge you to upgrade to the latest browser version. Even if you aren't playing MUD, this is probably a good idea, because you get the latest improvements and security patches (and, despite rumours to the contrary, the newer versions actually do work better in most cases!)

General Information

The MUD2 Front-End is a Java application. Java applications are supported by Web browsers such as NetScape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The application here has been tested to work with Netscape Navigator version 4 or later, or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4 or later.

When you start the program by clicking on one of the links above, several ten kilobytes of program code will be downloaded to your computer. Depending on the speed and reliability of your Internet connection and the power of your computer, this may take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Please be patient!

Also, when you play the game for the very first time, you may notice occasional pauses with heavy modem activity. No need to be alarmed; it's just the front-end program downloading additional components as and when they are needed. This method is preferred to loading all components at once, which would result in an excessive loading time for some.
